She climbed out herself, stretched her hands out over her head, twirled, and took a deep breath before reaching back in for her textbook. She noticed Teto rummaging around in her backpack and briefly considered offering to help look for whatever it was.
Feeling her heart began to race again, she took a few more deep breaths and forced herself to focus on the park around her instead of the token hidden in her book. The temperature would be nice for a while now, and the rain had held off that day. Not a lot of other people were there-school had just finished, and it was still within business hours. A slight breeze blew. Birds sang. The twins had claimed a nearby bench and begun commenting on a small fluffy dog in their line of sight. Without speaking about it, everyone seemed to agree to take a minute to relax before continuing their earlier conversation.
Just 'pretty good'? Did you do the thing you wanted to do that you wouldn't say what it was? Miku and Teto both gave a start, then Miku started flipping through her textbook while Teto reached into her bag. Time seemed to freeze. Len's moth dropped open and a tinge of red began to creep across his face. Mikuo looked back and forth between everyone uncomprehendingly.
A wild grin flashed across Rin's face before she got it back under control. Miku and Teto stood rigid, the ghosts of smiles that had started only moments before still lingering on their faces as their hearts plummeted. He stared for a few seconds. His eyes focused on something behind them. I didn't see you get here. What's up? Miku spun around to see a frozen and shocked Neru, one hand in her backpack, a skateboard under her arm, and her hair in disarray.
Not much. Gotta give this back to him. Nice cover. In the back of her mind, Miku gave Neru credit. She had a sinking feeling she knew why the other girl was actually here. Neru straightened up and seemed to recover some of her usual composure. Well, I never. And Mikuo, were you flirting with her? The group let out a collective groan at the word flirting.
Miku and Teto slowly withdrew their arms, looking at each other and Len in shame. Mikuo pulled his car keys out of his pocket. Teto's right-you should all be studying. Miku had a feeling she should say something- anything -to try to smooth over the situation, but nothing came to mind.
Rin snickered at the sight of her brother sitting in the middle of a pile of fan mail she had dumped on him, pouting and with his arms crossed. Letters, small packages, and candy flew everywhere as she threw another stack at him.
And I think I have a right to be. Rin picked up a letter and pressed it into his hand. I think this one's from one of your classmates. This is coming from the person who called me a weirdo when I wrote Spice? She sent me one of the good candy bars. They made us less susceptible to disease, you'd think we'd be immune to that too. She rolled her eyes as he immediately crammed half of the bar into his mouth.
She gave him a few seconds to chew before prodding him again. Len nearly spit out the chocolate. Hold up! He managed to choke down some of his mouthful before answering. I only just learned that they liked me an hour ago.
I need some time to think about this. And-wait, what makes you say Neru was about to ask me out? Just don't lead any of them on, okay? It would be a little hypocritical right about now. And you're one to talk about being a hypocrite when you would have eaten all of the candy in this pile by now. She threw a crumpled envelope at him. It was Rin's turn to turn a rather luminescent shade of red. Not really called for! And Kaito's got a lot of good qualities. Len smirked.
And nice. And he's still nice. And he always knew all the best ice cream places in town. And elementary school boys are stupid. And how come you even remember any of that? So of course I would end up remembering the part of it that's least convenient for you. You still waiting for sempai to notice you? But…do you ever stop and tell yourself that he might be more interested in someone who's a bit closer to his age? Len assumed she would go after him for the jab or ask him how he somehow managed to retain that , but instead something in her eyes darkened.
It seems like most of the fans think about it too with the way they assume he and Miku are a couple. And it's not hard to see why they'd thin that too with the way he's always following her around and doing all these songs with her…". What's she have to do with the way Miku gets into everything she's not supposed to? Len stared, the sudden urge to defend Miku giving way to concern over his sister's unusual behavior.
The servants jumped to comply, judging by the growing frown on Rillianne's face that this was not a good time to make any mistakes. Allen held back, a plate carefully balanced on one hand, trying to decide whether or not to approach.
She must have known he was there. She didn't discuss the situation with anyone besides himself and Chartette-although she rarely cared who was in earshot. He swallowed a sigh and slid up to her side, looking over the balcony rail with her. The man in question was the king of the island nation of Marlon-although some said that he was king in name only, with his mother making many of the decisions. He was a nice enough sort-Allen had interacted with him frequently throughout the course of his engagement to Rillianne.
Allen was also entirely unsurprised when the man's closeness to Rillianne crumbled with each new thoughtless decision she made. He was easy to pick out in a crowd-if his awkward demeanor didn't single him out, his bright blue hair did.
The whole family was a bit odd when it came to hair color. Allen had heard rumors of the workings of spirits. Michaela had told him about King Kyle-about his friendship with her employer, his sudden arrival weeks ago, and his unwanted advances.
She felt uncomfortable at the possibility of angering a king and could do little to dissuade him. Allen resisted the urge to growl his frustrations. At least Kyle was a perfect gentleman, and could provide for her-or he could have if he wasn't already engaged. Still, the man had found and latched on to her with surprising speed when she had only arrived in Lucifenia that day to visit the court sorceress and her apprentice.
Rillianne accepted one, chewing thoughtfully. Then, suddenly her eyes widened. Rillianne gave a disgusted squeak and pulled at the string around her own neck, drawing out a near-identical pendant.
He gave me this to seal our engagement! How dare he give her the same thing? Allen found himself disagreeing with Rillianne more and more these days, but this was one thing they could still agree on.
Neru stood on the steps of the old building, waiting as a girl with light green hair finished saying her goodbyes to her friend, a girl who resembled Miku but with red eyes and orange-streaked black hair. While the two friends were making plans for the next visit, Neru was making some plans of her own. The other girl looked down her nose at Neru. With her ordinary black hair and brown eyes, and her classically graceful features, there was little besides her bearing to suggest she was related to the other teenagers who lived in the mansion.
Three of them had been rebuilt into Vocaloids by a robotics expert unaffiliated with any of the known companies, and they now resembled their official counterparts almost as much as they retained their past appearances. This one-Hina-had not, for reasons unknown to Neru. Hina shrugged. That's why I'm running a few more tests-but don't worry. I'll have the scene set, you just need to deliver Miku. It'll be worth it, though-I'll get what I want, you'll get your scandal.
Not everyone has to resort to petty crime to improve their situation. She'll never know what hit her. Neru gulped as he made his way toward her.
She had become friends with the Meikane siblings-Kiru, Karu, and Kuro-as her sister considered Kiru one of her best friends, and she had put up with Hina rather grudgingly until Hina had offered her a deal. Today, something seemed different about the boy walking toward her, and she knew exactly why.
Mentally she slapped herself. She was only thinking about it because she had just been humiliated in front of Len. Kuro had nothing to do with it. Sorry about that-things were crazy up at work until they weren't. And then with the temp work it's not so much that I didn't know my schedule as much as I really didn't have a schedule. I mostly had to let Naru get herself here and back, and I feel kind of neglectful. And speaking of, I, uh, heard bits and pieces of what happened.
And no, I won't take charity. Neru laughed humorlessly. They wanted me to get on a bunch of pro-Miku message boards and troll? They wanted to pull all of her videos and pictures because they'd tried and failed to promote a virtual idol, and then she arrived and blew them out of the water?
Maybe they should have expected some backlash. They wanted me to tamp down the rumors that they were behind it by getting on the same message boards and telling everyone to lay off? Maybe they should have given me a secure line to do it from instead of expecting me to do it from my apparently very traceable cell phone. But nooooo, they wouldn't bother protecting me because they wanted me to get caught.
So they could say one of their employees went rogue and fire me to make themselves look better. That really sucks. But…why would they turn you if they were so anti-Vocaloid? They wanted to pander to the same crowd of grody old men, salty neckbeards, and teenage girls with body image issues who want to be just like their favorite idols and don't care about anything else.
For some reason they thought they could win this one. I thought you could use it for your drinks, like on special occasions. Or you could use it whenever you wanted to. I mean, you don't have to use it, but I thought you might like it anyway. Erm…I'm babbling, aren't I? Well, I hope you like it. Meiko shook her head with a small smile. They looked at each other, then started laughing. The other Vocaloids soon joined in. Even Leon had to smile as he passed through the room.
Rin smiled and laughed along with everyone else. She was happy that the joint birthday had gone so well, and it was kind of cute to see Meiko and Kaito get flustered over each other. However, she could not explain the rising red tide of venom in her heart. Rillianne huffed and gathered up her skirts as she hurried down the hall after him. I have a special task for you.
She gave a stilted nod back in the direction of the throne room. I am also aware that I've taken a blunt implement to a situation where a razor touch might do better-and while I have no problem with this, I would like to ensure my success by employing both. I want you to go to Elphegort yourself-alone, so as to gather information better. You will know my troop movements, so you can avoid getting caught in a battle.
Make sure she doesn't escape. He could only stare in shock. Fortunately she brushed past him, so he didn't have to explain his lack of an affirmation. He had thought he couldn't choose, but now he was certain that this would be the first order from her that he would refuse to follow. Len woke up covered in sweat, feeling like something inside him had been torn to pieces.
He squirmed around and only managed to roll himself out of bed, taking the top sheet with him. He blinked, staring up at the ceiling, then angled himself so he could see the top bunk.
Rin was still in place and sound asleep. His muddled thoughts swirled to clarity just long enough for Miku to pop into his mind, and he was seized with the urge to check on her. Instead, he dragged himself back into his bed. For one, she'd probably be mad if you woke her up. For another…why? Rin makes a few snide comments, and suddenly you're racing to check on her whenever you have a nightmare?
At least his irritation at himself was enough to drive away the last shreds of anxiousness, allowing him to relax again. Miku had been meaning to read the book all day, but other things kept getting in the way. She knew that Luka had already read her book and that the twins were about to start theirs. Luka insisted quite pointedly, also saying strangely that they would find it "rather informative". Everyone, including the guests, had to help. No explanation was given.
She had just finished putting the dishes back in the cabinet when Meiko came into the living room. There's some people at the door who want to talk to you. They say they're from a group called 'AH Software'. This brought another round of confused looks, this time with a touch of dismay. The Vocaloids followed him to the door, where three men in suits were waiting with a girl with pink hair. It's the girl from space! They were all too focused on the newcomer.
Meiko was the first to recover, reaching out to shake Miki's hand and nearly tipping over in the process. The manager waved back in the direction of the studio. There's so much cool stuff to show you. As she led Miki away, she saw Rin jump up in excitement.
Someone else to play video games with! I'll go get everything set up. In fact, you insisted on sitting out of Black Rock Shooter for it. Everything we've read is stuff we've dreamed about. Not to mention that these sound like something we would write if we lived back in…when was this again?
But check this out. Don't you think that several people here seem a lot like the others? The names are all the same as the characters in our songs, and they all match up to who we got to play them.
Like…Michaela seems exactly like Miku, and Elluka is a decent bit like Luka when she's in one of those moods where she's just over that day. Rin winced. Even the names of the people who weren't our characters sound the same.
We never cast Teto as anyone, but here we have Chartette. And I have my suspicions about who Ney would be. I always wanted to be a princess, but she seems really mean. I've heard of people having weirder obsessions with celebrities. If Kaito and Meiko can remember little bits about being human before they were Vocaloids, that means we were probably humans first too, right?
So that means we weren't even born when these were written. She and Miki stopped in the doorway. Hi guys! Rin's tone was even enough to be unsettling. You'll be rooming with Gumi until the Engloids leave the way Kaiko is rooming with me, but after that you'll get your own room.
The twins were right about the journals of Rillianne Lucifen and Allen Abbadonia-not only did they describe the events in the twins' dreams, but they filled in numerous other details as well. That night, the twins got more of the story than they ever had before-how the king and queen of Lucifenia died from a disease, how Rillianne came to power, how the kingdom suffered.
Just like in the songs the twins had written, Rillianne was a proud princess who thought she was entitled to anything she wanted. She declared war on the neighboring kingdom for the love of one man, killing most of the population of Elphegort and wearing the army down. When the mercenary force she hired to protect the palace in the absence of the army got out of hand, the people rebelled, led by the man she had sought to make hers and a woman in red.
Almost every detail was in place, right down to the switch at the end where Allen gave himself up in his sister's place. Although the twins had dreamed this all before, this was the first time that it was all together in an unbroken sequence.
Lu li la, lu li la, this singing voice To whom does it reach as it rings out through the night? Crossing time, changing lives, and the key is called "words", Which will open doors to the unknown. The twins woke up at the exact same time, sitting bolt upright.
Immediately after checking to see if the other was awake, they started babbling simultaneously about their dreams. Rin finally stopped and cut Len off. We've seen all of this before though-we wouldn't have been able to write those songs otherwise. Len gave her a questioning look, and she realized that she had trailed off for a few seconds. I'll admit that my headcanon for Nero is heavily influenced by one of my high school friends, while Naru was influenced by a friend's little sister.
I know he's supposed to be 12 and she's supposed to be 16, but in my mind it just makes more sense if that's swapped. Sorry, this work doesn't allow non-Archive users to comment. Get an Invitation. Comments: 5 Kudos: 15 Bookmarks: 5 Hits: Chapter 9 : Ch. Chapter Text Len stared idly at the TV, waiting for the manager to let him and Rin have the remote again. Lu li la… Len shook his head. A voice cut through his thoughts. Get off of my case. A spaceship crash-landed just outside of town! That was certainly not something you heard every day. Was that her? Lu li la, the song echoed, as if in agreement.
He smiled wryly. At the very least, it's a good way to vent. Rin leaned over to look at the notepad. Maybe…the song can do something for him? He began humming the song. We believed we could go anywhere. Will the day come when a cooped bird in a cage flutters its wings? If I can stay by your side when you shed tears, I dare to stay here with you. A firefly flying in the dark flickers like a flame.
We were laughing together by the window casting shadows, weren't we? Ah, your hair came loose and it's fluttering and swaying in the wind. We're sitting shoulder to shoulder and getting warmed. I want to share the time like this with you, forever and ever.
